Betty Boop is ongetwijfeld een van de bekendste striplegendes van de afgelopen eeuw. Haar sexy imago dat al in de jaren dertig was ontworpen leeft al zeventig jaar voort en het eind lijkt niet in zicht. Haar verleidelijke poppenoogjes, haar rode blote jurk, uitdagende jarretel en kort zwart kapseltje roept bij iedereen wel iets op. Schattig en onschuldig, vrouwelijk en charmant, Betty is en blijft een van de leukste sekssymbolen ooit op het witte doek.
Wie is Betty Boop?
Betty Boop werd in 1930 ontworpen door Max Fleischer. In de eerste plaats was Betty Boop getekend als hondje en stelde het vriendinnetje voor van een ander hondje genaamd Bimbo. Haar figuurtje was gemodelleerd volgens Mae West, haar stem die van Mae Questel en haar zangstijl was die van Helen Kane. De eerste cartoons werden gemaakt voor Paramount. Haar echte debuut maakte ze als onbekend nachtclubsterretje in 'Dizzy Dishes', een van de eerste tekstanimatiestrips. De oren van het hondje waren nu veranderd in oorbellen en zo werd haar gestalte zoals we het nu kennen, geboren. In 1932 werd duidelijk dat Betty niet alleen kon zingen maar alles kon, zowel drama, musical als comedy. Haar karakter had flair, ze was gedurfd en assertief, terwijl ze haar onschuldige image niet losliet en ze onafscheidelijk leek van haar hondje Pudgy. Het publiek ging van haar houden. Het werd de start van maar liefst 120 korte animatiefilms met namen zoals 'Stopping the show', 'Betty Boop for president' and 'Boilesk'. De fillmpjes gaan veelal over haar ambitie om filmster te worden, daarbij vertegenwoordigde ze de vrouw zonder echtgenoot die haar eigen weg ging. De filmcode uit die tijd schreef voor dat ze haar decollete moest intomen en haar rok langer moest. Betty was TE sexy. In 1939 viel het doek met 'Yip yip yippy'.
Hoe bleef de legende levend?
Betty Boop speelgoed en poppen verschenen mede in de dertiger jaren en King Features Syndicate begon met de distributie van een stripje in de krant getekend door Bud Counihan. Nu na tientallen decennia heeft het publiek haar herontdekt, haar humor, haar muziek en haar charmes. Dit heeft als gevolg dat er eigenlijk al sinds de jaren tachtig een ware run is op artikelen met haar beeltenis erop, een enorme merchandising kwam op gang. Lampen, portemonnees, dekbedhoezen, T-shirts, koektrommels, mouse-pads, douchegordijnen, fotolijsten, mokken, schorten, posters, tassen, sleutelhangers, paraplu's, klokken... de lijst is oneindig.
Ze is met haar verschijning een collector's item geworden voor al diegenen die geen genoeg kunnen krijgen van haar stijl.
